Critical Survey of American Literature, Third Edition. Steven G. Kellman, editor, Ipswich, MA: Salem Press, 2016. Six Volumes. 3422 pgs.

Critical Survey of American Literature, previously published as Magill's Survery of American Literature, is a comprehensive, six-volume set that includes indepth entries on more than 400 American authors from the Colonial Period to the present. The Third Edition adds new entries on more than 100 authors, including former U.S. Poet Laureate Billy Collins. Entries include a biography, an analysis of the author's themes and style, a thorough discussion of the major works, a bibliography, and a list of discussion topics. The entry on Billy Collins, for example, provides close readings of the poet's two editions of Selected Poems: Sailing Alone Around the Room (2001) and Aimless Love (2012).
